Make sure you have a licensed and experienced pest professional doing your timber pest inspection and report. Due to deregulations in the industry it is common for a builder to do your timber pest inspection. These days’ builders will do a few modules of the insect course and start doing timber pest inspections. Builders are not vermin controllers nor are they experienced in Termite work. Do not let a builder do your timber vermin inspection.
Make sure they are insured! What they need to have is Indemnity insurance and public liability insurance. This is more of a safety net but your goal is to choose a reputable inspector. You don’t want to have a court battle on an insurance claim because the inspector was negligent performing pest or termite remedial work without the required knowledge and skill.

Importantly, these are natural, family and pet friendly bug control methods you can apply now without any cost!
Step 1: Remove water sources
Your first step is to investigate your home to find where bugs may be entering and hiding. You should also check for possible food and water sources. Two areas you’ll want to be sure to check are under your sink in the kitchen and behind your refrigerator. If water is collecting in these areas, this will provide a drinking ground for rats and cockroaches to thrive. Every living rodent or spider needs water. Remove the water source by drying water condensation and getting any leaking pipes fixed.
Step 2: Declutter
If you have piles of unnecessary or unneeded items laying around your house, it’s time to get rid of them. This may include stacks of old magazines and newspapers, old shoes in the closet, and any other clutter that you don’t need. These things give bugs a place to hide, not to mention material for building nests. It is also harder to clean around areas of clutter, resulting in an increased food supply for many types of insects. Cardboard is especially attractive to bugs, so get rid of any empty boxes you may have lying around.
Go through our house and gather up items that you are no longer using or no longer need. Either sell or donate these things, and then organise what belongings you have left. All storage should be at least an inch off the floor and away from the walls. Keep food in tightly latched plastic containers, especially pet food.
Step 3: Clean
In this step you remove any markings and droppings left by insects, as well as getting rid of their food sources. Vacuum, mop, and thoroughly wash all of the cabinets, countertops, and other surfaces in your home, especially under the refrigerator, oven, and kitchen sink. Use your vacuum attachments to make the job of reaching into those corners and crevices easier. Once your initial cleaning is done, continue to clean regularly to keep your house free of food and water sources. Wipe up crumbs and spills immediately, wash your dirty dishes right away, and empty your garbage before you go to bed. Leave pet bowls empty overnight and refill them in the morning. Keep your drains covered when they’re not being used as well.
If you’re facing an infestation of cockroaches, be sure to sweep or vacuum under furniture and in other hiding places to remove any dead cockroaches. These can decay into roach dust, which may trigger allergies and asthma attacks in some people.
Step 4: Close the Entrances
Next, you will need to seal the entrances pests use to get into your house. These are commonly located in kitchens and bathrooms, where pipes enter your house. Concentrate your efforts in the kitchen and bathroom, and work your way outward from there. Use cement, plaster, or caulk to seal the cracks and gaps where pests enter, and apply weather stripping around your windows and doors.
Step 5: Baits
If you’ve done all of the above steps and your vermin problem has not been resolved in a matter of weeks, it may be time to use some bug baits. These kill pests by poisoning them, and therefore should be used with caution. Only resort to this method once all of the above steps have been taken, and keep the baits out of reach of your pets and children.

How to choose an expert
There are some times when you might have the misfortune to discover an infestation going on in your home and you will want to get rid of the vermin as soon as you can. When you are rushing you might jump in for the first bug specialist that you see without even giving it a second thought. Although you have every right to be in a hurry, it is important that you spend some time to find out more about the pest expert so that you are sure you will get the best possible services at a reasonable price. There are a few things that you should definitely discuss with the company that you want to hire so that you can avoid any bad decisions that you will later regret.
When you are considering quotes from several pest controllers, the first thing that you should do is talk to some of the people you know and see if they can recommend you one. Ask around your friends, colleagues and your family if they have previously used such services and if they can recommend you a vermin expert. It is highly important that you do not go making deals with the first company that you see, but rather first find people who have used it and ask them what they think. If you do not have anyone to ask, or you are afraid of talking to people about your little misfortune (which is a lot more common than you might think), then you should look around forums and other places where you can find feedback from any previous customers of the company.
Another thing that should be a factor when you choose an insect eradication company is the type of chemicals that they will operate with during the treatment process. You might be highly sensitive to some chemicals or they might be using ones that are not safe for any pets or small children. It is a good idea to talk to your doctor about the chemicals in order to find out if there is any chance that they might cause some harm to you and your family.
Followup insect and bug treatment
Although there is no denying that you have to hire a pest controller as soon as you see any signs of an infestation you should not go about it blindly. By finding out more information about the company from past customers as well as the services they offer and other things that should be listed on their website, you will be ensured that the services you pay for will be worth it. Suffering from a bug infestation can really be a cause of frustration and stress.
