Infestations usually begin in kitchens and pantries, areas where there is an abundant supply of food and water. Once the population becomes too large for these areas to accommodate, they start spreading out. Cockroaches belong to the order of insects called Blattodea. This order counts over 4,000 species all over the world, 400 of which are native to Australia. These native species have variations in appearance, habitat and diet. All species from this order have originated from the tropical areas of Africa 300 million years ago, ranging in size from just a few millimetres to a size of up to 70 mm. The largest would be the Giant Burrowing Cockroach (Macropanesthia rhinoceros), which can be found in Northern Queensland.
Unfortunately for us, a majority of Blattodea insects are regarded as pests. No matter the size and color, all species have a similar body which features the following characteristics:
- Compound eyes
- Leaf-shaped cerci at the tip of the abdomen
- Long antennae
- Oval shaped and dorso-ventrally compressed body
- Thorax that is protected by a big plate called pronotum which extends over the head.
- Two pairs of membranous wings and forewings which are sclerotized more than the hind wings
- Very strong mouthparts for chewing
Various Species in Australia
Most often, cockroaches turn up in warm and humid locations such as tropical regions and heated areas in homes and offices. In Australia, the most common species would be German cockroaches. These can be found all over the country, except for southern places like Tasmania as they prefer warm and wet areas similar to ones where they originated from.
Larger cockroach species such as American, Australian and Smoky-brown cockroaches are very common in warmer regions. As they do not need a large amount of water, they can be found in roof voids, drains, sewers and grease traps. Oriental cockroaches inhabit cooler parts of the country but are very rare in general. Brown banded cockroaches like temperatures over 27 degrees Celsius. They do not need much moisture and hence, can be found in locations without a source of water.
In households, they typically occupy moist areas with whatever type of food. Cockroaches are great survivors as they would feast on virtually any organic matter, no matter its state. They seek food scraps, be it from particles on the floor or leftovers from unsealed meal containers. Pet food, rotten meat, sugar and grease deposits…the list goes on. They even eat glue and book bindings. Having such a rapid breeding cycle means that this cockroach can establish itself in your home very quickly.Call us (02) 8007 4666 for Cockroaches services Greystanes
