    SPECIES

    Common Pest Birds in Sydney

    Introduced Species

In Sydney, several of the bird species deemed as pests come from overseas – including pigeons, indian mynas, starlings and sparrows. The NSW government provides guidelines on how to properly identify and manage invasive bird species

Where they nest: Feral pigeons are one of the most common pest birds faced in Sydney. They commonly roost on ledges, roofs, solar panels, air-conditioning units, and balconies. They will typically try to nest under a sheltered structure, like gaps between roof tiles or scaffolding under cover, which provides protection against predators.

Damage they cause: Pigeon droppings are highly acidic and can corrode paint, metal, stone and roofing material over time. Droppings should be dealt with immediately before the underlying material is permanently scarred.

Health risks: Pigeons, like many bird species, can carry diseases and be the vector for some serious pathogens. Their droppings and nesting material can also contain pathogens, such as Salmonella and E. coli. It’s always important to wear gloves and a mask when dealing with birds.

Where they nest: Roofs and ceiling spaces, under bridges and in large trees. We recommend checking for any gaps between your roof and tiles and sealing any you may find. Indian mynas usually build messy nests made of a number of different materials, including garbage like plastic. They love to hang around food sources, so keeping a clean environment is a preventative step.

Damage they cause: Aggresively drive out native species. Harsh, unpleasant notes. Not fussy about food, and will make a mess digging through a garbage bin. Their messy nature makes them susceptible to parasites and other diseases. When in a group, droppings can become a health hazard due to the sheer number.

Health risks: Indian Mynas and their nests are known to carry mites and other avian diseases (some which can be transmitted to humans). When humanely trying to remove one of these birds, always wear gloves and thoroughly wash your hands afterwards.

Where they nest: Sparrows prefer sheltered spaces such as roof voids, gutters, ducting systems, wall cavities and sheds.

Damage they cause: Their nests can block drainage systems and ventilation areas, which can lead to water damage.

Health risks: Their nesting material may also attract bird mites and other pests.

    Protected Native Species

Many Australian bird species are protected under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and strict regulations apply on how to properly handle them in a pest situation. Our technicians ensure all management strategies are focused on humane deterrence and property protection.

Where they nest: Flat roofs, balconies, ledges and coastal infrastructure near plenty food sources.

Damage they cause: Scavengers like seagulls are messy eaters and won’t clean up after themselves after rummaging through the bin. Apart from the waste and extra litter they create, their droppings can stain surfaces and damage roofs over time.

Health risks: Like other bird species, their droppings can spread bacteria and cause hygiene issues for food-handling industries.

Where they nest: Cockatoos enjoy nesting in large trees, especially eucalyptus ones. In more urban environments they can be found near areas of food opportunity, comfortably sitting from a vantage point.

Damage they cause: In residential areas cockatoos often attack fruit trees in backyards. Their powerful beaks are designed to easily break open seeds for the nutrition inside. They do leave a big mess behind, as the rest of the fruit is discarded. In more destructive cases they have been seen chewing through timber features, damaging outdoor furniture, antennaes on roofs and even solar panel wiring insulation.

Health and nuisance risks: Large flocks can create significant noise and dropping issues. Discarded food scraps leave a large mess and attract other pests.

Where they nest: Magpies like to build nests in tall trees, like at parks or in large gardens.

Damage they cause: Their territorial behaviour can create safety concerns for pedestrians and small children near nesting areas.

Health and safety risks: Magpie swooping incidents can cause minor injuries to cyclists or children. This level of aggresiveness typically only lasts during breeding season, between August and October.

Where they nest: Swallows like building nests around homes and commercial buildings. They typically build small, cup-shaped nests made from mud and grass, and are commonly found on elevated surfaces such as eaves, balconies, garages, and under bridges.

Damage they cause: While generally harmless, swallows can become a nuisance when nesting in large numbers, as their droppings can stain surfaces, create slip hazards, and require frequent maintenance.

Health and safety risks: Their nests may also harbour bird mites and other parasites.

    RISKS

Why Birds Are More Than Just a Nuisance

Contacting a pest control expert to handle bird control is often overlooked, but ignoring the facts can cause significant property damage, health hazards and secondary pest problems.

    Corrossion

Accumulated droppings are highly acidic and can corrode roofing materials, signage, solar panels, and other machinery, accelerating wear and increasing maintenance costs.

    Water Damage

Nesting material can frequently block gutters and downpipes, which can cause water damage if water is left to pool on a rooftop.

    Physical Damage and Fire Risk

Birds that have taken up nesting in roof cavities can tear insulation and spread debris. Nesting material placed near electrical wiring poses a serious fire risk for homes and businesses.

    Health Considerations

Bird droppings and nesting sites can carry pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli and fungal spores, particularly if dried droppings become airborne. Bird droppings can also attract other pests, such as flies.

    Bird Mites

When birds abandon their nests, bird mites can migrate indoors in search of a new host. These microscopic animals bite humans and cause skin irritation. Homeowners will often incorrectly seek flea control services, especially if they have a pet.

    Non-compliance Risk

Food preparation and service industries, such as cafes and restaurants, face the most risk when it comes to HACCP non compliance. A failed or poor health inspection can lead to a huge loss of customer trust.

    HUMANE CONTROL

    Our Bird Control Methods

At Masters Pest Control Sydney, effective bird control starts with choosing the right method for the specific site. All of our bird control methods focus on causing no harm and follow NSW Environmental Protection Authority guidelines. After inspecting your property, our technicians will recommend the best approach forward, based on the situation.

    Bird netting

A physical barrier blocking access to rooflines, eaves and other open areas. A particularly useful child and pet-safe treatment option.

    Bird spikes

Installed on ledges, gutters and window sills to stop birds from landing and roosting.

    Bird wire diagram

A taut wire that retracts when birds try to land, deterring them naturally.

    Bird gel repellent

Creates a sticky surface that birds find uncomfortable to rest on. Useful for places where spikes aren’t appropriate, e.g statues.

    Bird shock tape

In more persistent cases, bird shock tape can be installed to deliver a harmless pulse that conditions birds to stay away.

    Nest removal and cleanup

Our team handles the safe removal of any nests, droppings and debris.

    COMMERCIAL CONTROL

Bird Control for Businesses and Strata

If you’re a business or apartment-block owner, a bird control issue is a bit more of a serious problem. You have strict hygiene and safety standards to comply with, including HACCP and local council health regulations. The presence of birds can quickly lead to breaches.

Contamination from droppings, feathers, and nesting materials can put stock, inventory, and food preparation areas at risk, while larger or multi-unit properties—such as shopping centres, office buildings, and strata complexes—require coordinated, site-wide solutions to manage bird activity effectively. Without a structured approach, issues can spread across tenancies, increasing costs and creating ongoing reputational risks.

Masters Pest Control Sydney understands these pressures and delivers bird control solutions designed specifically for commercial and strata settings.

With HACCP and CM3 certifications, our technicians are equipped to work within regulated environments, ensuring all treatments align with compliance requirements for restaurants and cafes, hotels, offices, and residential strata buildings.

Our expertise is trusted by major brands including TikTok, Rydges Hotels, Savills, and IGA. Whether you’re managing a single site or a large portfolio, Masters provides tailored solutions that prioritise compliance, protect your reputation, and minimise long-term costs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bird Pest Control

What birds are considered pests in Sydney?

Sydney's invasive pest species consists of (Feral) Pigeons, Indian Mynas, European Starlings and House Sparrows. Native species, including magpies, seagulls and cockatoos, are protected in NSW under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.

    Is Bird Pest Control Humane?

At Masters Pest Control Sydney, our technicians are fully licensed with the NSW Environmental Protection Authority, and our control methods focus on unharmful, natural approaches, like obstruction, bordering and deterrants.

How much does bird control cost in Sydney?

Bird control pricing can vary depending on the issue at hand. There are many factors affecting this, including but not limited to, the size of your property, the extent of bird activity, the species of bird, and the preferred solution, to name a few.

Can Bird Droppings Make You Sick?

Extremely, as bird droppings can contain salmonella and E. coli. When droppings dry, fungi become airborne, which present an inhalation risk. Histoplasmosis is a known infection to come from dried bird and bat droppings.

What Are Bird Mites and Should I Be Worried?

Bird mites are tiny parasites that live on birds and in their nests, but when those nests are abandoned, they can migrate indoors in search of a new host. In homes and businesses, this often leads to bites on humans, causing itching and irritation, and the source can be difficult to identify without professional help. While they don’t live permanently on people, an active infestation should be addressed promptly, often alongside related parasite treatments such as flea control to fully resolve the issue.
