    What are rodent mites?

Rodent mites (Ornithonyssus bacoti) are small, oval-shaped bugs, similar to bird mites. Adult mites are usually pale in colour, but can appear darker depending on the period it last fed on blood. Although rodent mites are a less common problem than bird mites, rodent mites tend to frequent commercial or industrial buildings.

Rodent mites have a lifecycle that span around two weeks. They mainly feed on rats or rodents, which serve as their hosts. Although rodent mites do not feed on humans, these bugs bite and can cause severe cases of irritation and itchiness.

How to Stop or Prevent Cockroach Infestations

Remove any potential food sources that may accumulate in places where cockroaches often visit, such as the kitchen and dining area.

Cockroaches require food to survive. Make sure to not leave unwashed dishes in the sink or leftover food on the table or countertop. To prevent attracting cockroaches, regularly clean pet dishes, unsecured food containers, garbage containers, and litter boxes.

Always maintain proper sanitation by regularly cleaning your property.

Get rid of junk and maintain clean storage space. Avoid accumulating trash and unnecessary junk such as old newspapers, food cartons, boxes, and other items that could be an ideal nesting ground not only for cockroaches but also for a wide range of stubborn pests, including ratstermites, flies, and more. Regular cleaning and vacuuming may also help you detect early signs of a cockroach infestation.

Remove possible sources of water to prevent cockroaches

Just like any other bug, cockroaches require water to survive. Moisture is particularly vital for this kind of bug. That is why you will often find them proliferating near the bathroom and kitchen. Fix any leaking pipes or taps that need repair.

      Watch out for cockroach eggs.

Inspect new items that you’ll be bringing inside your home or property. Furniture, appliances, secondhand items, and food storage containers may contain cockroach eggs. These tiny eggs may pave the way for a full-blown cockroach infestation.

Hire expert pest control professionals to inspect your home and plumbing fixtures regularly.

This would stop cockroaches from migrating and settling on your property. Occasionally, German cockroaches migrate from one area to another. This problem often happens in apartments and residential buildings with connected plumbing and shared features. There is a chance that cockroaches living in your neighbour’s place may explore and eventually settle in your property.

Without proper pest control, your property can become an ideal breeding ground for cockroaches. This common pest in Australian homes can enter your property through the tiniest cracks and crevices as well as through pipes and plumbing. No one wants cockroaches on their property. Here are ways you can prevent a cockroach infestation.

How can you prevent German cockroaches from infesting your home?

Prevent a cockroach infestation in your home

      Eliminate food sources

Cockroaches are scavengers. They scour your kitchen for food at night to survive. To discourage this, you need to eliminate their food source—store food in tightly sealed containers or plastic bags. Do not leave food sitting unattended on your kitchen counters. Always empty the sink and clean the dishes every night.

Clean your kitchen appliances, especially your fridge, microwave ovens and toasters, for crumbs and other food particles. Kitchen cabinets and the area under your sink can also have food spills. Always clean your kitchen counter with disinfectant to deter them from walking over them and eliminate their pheromones. Finally, use a tightly lidded trash can and empty it every night.

Eliminate entry points and hiding spots

As we’ve mentioned, cockroaches can enter your home through cracks and plumbing. As for their hiding places, cockroaches prefer tight cracks and dark empty spaces to hide during the day. Eliminating these can help you prevent a cockroach infestation—seal cracks and crevices as well as holes in your roofs or crawlspaces. Avoid clutter, especially in your cupboards and your floors. Doors and windows should fit within their frame to avoid cockroach entry—varnish wooden shelves and cabinets to seal them.

Book cockroach exterminators to completely remove cockroaches

If you see signs of infestation or would like to prevent it from happening in the first place, the best step you can take is to talk to cockroach pest control experts. These experts have extensive knowledge of the behaviour of each species of cockroach that plagues your property. They also know the best way on how to deal with them, including the proper pest control treatment to use against the specific type of roach you are dealing with.

Like every uninvited guest, cockroaches are never welcomed in households or any kinds of facilities for their potential risks to our health. To the extent when infestation goes beyond control and over-the-counter measures prove useless, pest control comes into play to eliminate them effectively. Before taking these measures, you may develop several questions about the effectiveness of these treatments, especially those target cockroaches, the culprit of some most common pest problems and one of the most stubborn, hard-to-kill pests. Here, you may find answers to some questions regarding cockroaches extermination and find, or adjust to, the appropriate levels of expectations from them.

      Complete German Cockroach Control

One of the most common questions is how long it might take for cockroaches to die off completely after professional pest control. The answer is, it varies, depending on the size of the infestation, the treatment, and the formulations used. There are cases when infestations are so severe that one treatment may not be sufficient and requires several follow-up visits. The same applies to questions regarding the times of treatments needed to make your facilities “cockroach-free”.

Keep your home clean to stop cockroaches.

For German cockroaches, you can expect a 70-80% reduction in their population in the first week and five more weeks to get rid of them completely, which makes the total of six weeks. However, if your infestation was severe, you may need a few more treatments.

But the most exact answer still depends on the situation. You can ask the pest control agency how long they feel your particular infestation will die off and when you may need another treatment to enjoy the pest-free state. A professional pest control company will be able to give you such information in detail.

(Read: How to get rid of cockroaches)

      First Pesticide Spray

For a few days or weeks after cockroach control, you will even see more roaches than ever. But don’t get stressed because they do not all die instantly, but it will rather take them a week or two to die out. The terrifying number of roaches you see also means they are coming out of their hiding places to die.

For example, if your house is treated with exterminator spray, the substance will need some time to reach the pest and kill them because cockroaches die of exposure to the insecticide in the spray, not its smell. During the one or two-week time, the poison is still working, and your problem should disappear with time.

You may also be concerned about seeing baby roaches, but that should not make you worried. Those baby roaches come from eggs that hatched after treatment. Most professional exterminator sprays contain chemicals that prevent baby roaches from maturing and breeding so that there would be no more descendants to take their place after they die.

After the first cockroach control treatment

After your home is treated for bugs, you may want to do a few things as below:

      • Keep your home clean: The first thing is to keep your house free from clutter, as you would not want to give those roaches places to hide. You should often clean and store sources like food, water spills, drains, dishwashers, trash cans properly. Also, keep an eye for leaks in faucets or pipes and fix them immediately.
Checking after the next pest spray
      • Block their entry: Another important step is determining the source or entry point for the cockroaches so that your house will not suffer from their infestation again. For instance, German cockroaches are one of the most common pests carried into the home. So, before bringing any used items home, homeowners should inspect those items for cockroaches. You may also want to seal up places such as or window cracks because Cockroaches may make their way into houses under doors and through open windows.
      • Combine other treatments: You can ask pest control professionals to use traps like glue boards in areas where cockroaches may exist, travel through, or do it yourself. Another tool you can use is baits and residuals to get the remaining roaches out of their hiding places. You can use gel baits or food bait stations, in which tasty treats are mixed with the deadly insecticide, or a homemade version with three parts boric acid to one part powdered sugar. However, those should be out of children’s or pet’s reach because they may get sick from chemicals inside the bait. Remember not to spray your baits with bug sprays, as that will make the bait less attractive to cockroaches.
      • Treat dying bugs: If you don’t know how to cope with dying roaches after the professionals have left, you can vacuum them up. Because high temperatures can kill roach adults, babies, and eggs, vacuuming may also kill roaches to a certain extent.

Don't Go for Easy But Ineffective Remedies - Let the Pros Handle the Cockroach Problem!

Kitchen Cockroach Infestation are Quite Common

Experts agree that certain home remedies and common cockroach solutions aren’t safe and are often ineffective in providing a lasting solution. To learn more about safe cockroach control methods, you may ask us thru chat or call (02) 8007 4666!

      What are cockroach bombs?

Also called cockroach bombs or total release foggers are insecticides that contain aerosol propellants, chemical ingredients that release their contents simultaneously to disinfect an area to control pests and kill insects. Roach bombs work by dispersing chemicals in the confined space. Then, pesticides in the air will kill all the cockroaches.

Has it been effective as advertised on the label of this product about killing all cockroaches by bug bomb, however?

Although on the bomb cockroaches, manufacturers often make claims such as pesticides can kill cockroaches quickly or remove insects deep within the crevice and even deodorise. But they rarely meet expectations.

Some Things You Need to Know:

      1. Cockroach bombs may not reach hard-to-reach areas such as cracks, crevices, and other cockroach hiding places

In fact, the bug bombs for roaches rarely reach into the cracks and crevices where pests hide. When chemicals are sprayed from insecticidal bombs into the air, most of them cannot reach the small holes, crevices and enclosed spaces where cockroaches hide. And so, it is difficult to eradicate all the cockroach nests deep inside.

A study in 2019 in Germany evidenced that foggers used in the house were incapable of killing and reaching deep inside to destroy the root: the roach’s nest.

There is also another problem: pesticides are often deposited on horizontal surfaces, while cockroaches often crawl under appliances, furniture, or vertically on walls. Therefore, using the bomb is also ineffective.

      2. Pyrethrin, cockroach bomb active ingredient

Pyrethrin (the active ingredient in many bomb bugs), all products bomb for cockroaches, contain pyrethroid, a pesticide that works effectively against mosquitoes, flies and some other insects, but it does not mean that it will work with all roaches. Sometimes, cockroaches are also resistant to the active ingredients, so they may not react to these ingredients in foggers.

In contrast, the pesticides can chase cockroaches out of their hiding place, causing dozens of cockroaches to emerge from the walls and running around the house.

      3. Bug bombs to scare cockroaches away

When you bomb roaches, the ingredients inside the roach bomb contain repellent that scares them and can run away in the opposite direction: deep inside the crevices. Then killing cockroaches will be more difficult.

      Are cockroach bombs safe?

Do common home remedies actually work?

Although this product may be effective in many circumstances, the use of incorrect or too many total release foggers may endanger people, animals and property.

There are many brands such as Raid Maxx, Mortein, Falcon. Still, they all have the same active ingredients, such as Tetramethrin, Cypermethrin, Iminoprothrin, Prallethrin, Permethrin (substances synthetic chemistry of the Pyrethroids group) or Propoxur (the Carbamate group).

The chemical substances in the foggers harm human health when inhaled. It can affect human health risk by chronic with pyrethroids and other toxic ingredients in roach bombs. They are not safe for humans or pets. Pyrethroids are less dangerous but can be life-threatening if inhaled in significant quantities (over 30 ml). The most dangerous effect, which has been recorded in the literature by medical experts, can be acute poisoning in humans if the victim is exposed to a significant amount of toxic in a short time. Hence the need to wipe out all pesticide residues can be formed in areas where pets can reach. Pyrethrin can also be particularly toxic to fish and other aquatic animals.

(SEE: Child and Pet-Friendly Pest Control)

Besides, the chemicals that are released in the air can be held on clothes and household items. People can be infected with that toxic substance by accidentally handling them without cleaning. Because the aerosol propellants in these foggers are often flammable, improper use could cause a fire or explosion. Also, not cleaning your home after spraying or reentering without airing out can lead to illness.

Therefore, it is ideal to use other methods to control cockroaches without needing bug bombs, such as Cockroach traps, Gels for cockroaches, Natural Insecticides, or clean houses. If using foggers, users need to be aware of their harmful effects on health, use roach bombs according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and have basic knowledge about first aid in case of insecticide poisoning.

The common accident when using insecticide products is chemical substances stuck to the body. They can irritate and burn the skin in an enormous amount of toxic. You need to change quickly into clothes and wash with cold water. Similarly, if the chemical in bug bombs gets in the eye, soaking the eye in water immediately. Water will dilute the concentration of the toxic and reduce irritation.

No one enjoys having ants crawling around their home, eating scraps of food in the kitchen, or randomly crawling in long trails on the wall. Since New South Wales (NSW) is susceptible to drought and extreme heat, ants will seek out sources of food and water inside your house. Ants can travel long distances from their colony to seek food. Some may even end up starting a new nest in and around your property.

If you’re dealing with an ant problem in your home or commercial property, you may call us for a FREE CONSULTATION. For pest control in Sydney, trust only the masters!

How exactly can we get rid of the ants? Here are the first steps you need to take to stop ants from infesting your property.

        1. The first thing you need to do is conduct a thorough inspection, starting with a conversation with your pest control professional.

        2. Get the floor plan of your house and mark all the areas where you’ve seen ants.

        3. Consult a pest exterminator. Discuss the problem with a professional and show them the marked floor plan. This way, you can help the pest exterminator determine the location of the ant mound and can help them when planning where to place the ant baits.

Ants have been found nesting in vehicles have made their nests in the First Aid Kit in a glove box and inside the wing mirror of an ambulance van! If you can find the nest, it will make your job a lot easier as you can deal with it directly.

If not, you will have to use sprays, dust, and baits. These will take longer, but if you use them as they should be used, they will still have a good effect. When using ant baits, you must identify the ant species so you can use the correct bait.

Residential homes, villas, duplexes and townhouses are prone to ant infestations.

Dealing with an Ant Infestation on Your Property

Ants like building their nests pretty much anywhere, but they really enjoy having an access point to food and water sources. Look for any ant colony or mound located around your property.

One spot that can be a place for ants to build a nest is your dryer vent, located outside the house. Here they have a straightforward entry point to plenty of water and food since in most houses it is common practice to have a dryer vent near the kitchen.

This is a great place to start looking for ants. Other places they like to hide include the porch and near doors. It would help if you also inspected flowerbeds and the rest of the yard. (RELATED: How to get rid of ants)

        Ant Baiting

Guidelines for Effective Ant Bait Usage

When employing ant baits, adhering to these fundamental rules is essential:

        1. Timely Consumption

Ants should consume ant bait within 1 to 2 days when it is most appealing and moist. Typically, ants will succumb within 3 days after feeding.

        2. Accurate Species Identification

To effectively combat ant infestations, correctly identify the ant species involved. Precise classification aids professionals in pinpointing ant nests and feeding sites.

        3. Trail Targeting

Locate ant trails before bait placement; otherwise, bait may go to waste without ants present.

        4. Varied Bait Formulas

Different ants have varying dietary preferences, including sweets and proteins. Some ant species may alter their diet based on seasonal or environmental conditions. Thus, maintaining a variety of baits is advisable.

        5. Proximity to Trails

Position ant bait in close proximity to ant trails, as these trails often lead to feeding or nesting sites.

        6. Adequate Bait Quantity

Ensure you apply a sufficient amount of ant bait for effective results.

        7. Eliminate Competing Food

Remove all other accessible food and liquids from your premises to prevent food competition.

        8. Heat and Surface Consideration

Avoid placing gel baits near heat sources, as heat can cause them to liquefy, rendering them ineffective. Similarly, refrain from using them on porous surfaces to prevent water loss.

        9. Sunlight Sensitivity

Some baits lose potency quickly when exposed to sunlight, so be aware of which types are sensitive to sunlight.

        10. Expiry Date Labeling

Granulated baits may expire after three months, so it’s advisable to mark the package with the date of opening.

        11. Avoid Insecticide Interference

Do not place ant baits on surfaces that have been or will be treated with powder or liquid insecticides to ensure their effectiveness.

        Ants Control Sydney

Choosing the Right Ant Pest Control Team

        Avoid outdated pest control methods.

In the old days, ant pest control measures were really unsophisticated. The pest controller would arrive at the location, unroll his long hose and deluge the front and backyard with approximately 60 litres of insecticide, typically organochlorine. This blanket spray, as often called, would cover all gardens, lawns, pathways, and the base of the house. Roof voids would have been covered with a synthetic pyrethroid powder and sometimes with space sprays with Dichlorvos. Was this effective? Well, whatever you think, this method often required a call-back as ants were still showing everywhere.

Avoid ineffective ant control methods that do not provide a lasting solution.

So, why was this method ineffective? Mostly because there was no real effort in trying to locate the nests. With this approach, insecticide would kill mostly workers but leave the larvae and pupae unharmed, leaving them to emerge as adults. The emulsion of the insecticide would be absorbed into the surface, which would prevent it from being picked up by the insects. However, this was the only and most used method that no one questioned, except for those who still had ants.

Avoid pest control that makes use of harmful or toxic chemicals.

Later on, insecticides were applied in a grid pattern to reduce the quantity used. Organochlorines were still not available at this time, and organophosphates such as chlorpyrifos were used. These were highly toxic and had a strong smell. More importantly, they were much more expensive. The breakthrough arrived with the introduction of ant baits available as solids, liquids, and viscous gels.

        Important Note About Ant Control:

Ant colonies that have only one queen, such as Camponotus, can be dealt with easily. Ant species with multiple queens and nests, such as Argentine ants, Odorous house ants, and Pharaoh’s ants, can be trickier to exterminate.

For instance, if you try to exterminate a Pharaoh’s Ant colony using synthetic pyrethroid, this would only result in their queen ants leaving the colony and building a new colony elsewhere in your property. In the end, you’ll have to pay for another pest control service.

This is why identifying a species is of utmost importance. Many pest control workers do not bother identifying the ant species and class them as black or brown. Proper identification of the ant species is important and should be done before doing anything else.

        Are ants dangerous?

The majority of ant species are not considered pests but only some native and introduced ant species cause concern. Some ants make their nests in decaying wood and are suspected of causing destruction when they will only infest already decaying wood.

Most ants come from the outside of households, but they can commonly find nests in places such as roof voids, wall cavities, inside window screens, and behind bathroom tiles. Basically, ants like the same places as cockroaches, so the control methods are very similar. Because of their nesting habits, ants often leave piles of gritty matter on the horizontal surfaces or around doors and window frames. If you inspect these piles up close, they often contain dead ants removed from their nests.

No matter how hard you clean the piles, they will continue to reappear as long as ants live near. This is not big of a problem, but it tends to get bigger as ants make their way inside pantries or food containers. Luckily for us, they are not considered dangerous to human health, but very rare Pharaoh´s ants that are very common in hospital areas can sometimes carry diseases.

How to spot an ant infestation?

        • Kitchens — benchtops, skirting boards, window sills, behind and inside cupboards, the backside of the refrigerator where the motor is located, behind kitchen taps and wall tiles, and under the sink;

        • All interior areas — skirting boards, carpet edges, window sills, power points (watch out for electricity), electrical cables, taps, and tiles. Look for piles of grit, sand, and dead ants as these usually form directly near the ant activity;

        • Exterior areas — ants can be anywhere as they can be trailing near fence rails, paths, in the lawn, or the garden.

        • Some species can be more active during the night. Following an ant trail that seems to disappear suddenly, you may find them appearing outside near the point of disappearance. If this proves unsuccessful, it probably means that they are nesting inside a wall or roof voids.

        • Since ants are social insects, they need to have a nest which is their centre of operations. Some ant species nest in decaying wood and soil, while some nest inside dwellings in many locations.

        Ant Insecticide Safety Guide

        • Non-repellent formulations are often superior to repellent formulations such as synthetic pyrethroids. This is because the ants will go through the non-repellent insecticide unknowingly. Some kinds of non-repellent actives and formulations are Bendiocarb, Fipronil, Indoxacarb, and Chlorfenapyr.

        • The sprays need to be applied to the base of walls, fences, and garden beds.

        • Sprays should be re-applied after the rain.

        • Insecticidal dust needs to be applied to roof voids as well.

        Effective Ant Control: Expert Tips

When dealing with an ant infestation, it’s crucial to take precise pest control measures. Here are some expert tips to assist you in effectively managing ant populations:

        1. Target the Nest

Identify the ant mound, which is the heart of their colony. To eliminate ants successfully, it’s essential to focus on this central location.

        2. Organic Pest Control Products

While there are organic pest control products available, they can sometimes be hit-or-miss. Organic remedies often lead ants to relocate and build new nests, making it crucial to target the source.

        3. Queen Elimination

The key to eradicating an ant colony is to eliminate the queen. Some homemade mixtures, such as a blend of cinnamon, baking soda, and coffee grinds, can deter ants. However, highly effective organic products are available, albeit at a higher cost. These products dehydrate ants to the point of death.

        4. Professional Assistance

Consider seeking professional help from ant experts who possess the knowledge and experience to tackle infestations effectively. They understand the precise actions required to eliminate ants comprehensively.

          General Information about Wasps

Wasp (Latin Vespidae) is an insect from the order of Hymenoptera. The female wasps raise their young by laying eggs on or in the larvae of other insects. The wasp larvae kill the host larvae and eat them.

There are tens of thousands of species, and they have spread to all parts of the world. They are usually around 10 to 15 mm in length. However, some species can grow much more, like the Asian giant hornet, which can grow up to 5 centimetres in length. The smallest species of wasps are Trichogrammatidae which are just 0.2 mm in length.

          Wasp Residential Pest Controller

Wasps and bees are quite similar. However, pest control for wasps and bees are quite different. Bees are an endangered species, and their nests should not be removed immediately unless they pose a valid threat. Wasp pest control, on the other hand, is more straightforward and common. As a result, wasp pest control can be done by pest control professionals quickly and safely.

          Wasp Pest Treatment

          Wasp stings are painful.

A wasp sting can cause burning pain, redness, and inflammation. Bees can sting only once because they leave their stinger behind in the skin of the victim. On the other hand, Wasps can sting repeatedly and then emit a chemical called pheromone that alerts other wasps to attack those nearby.

A wasp sting can cause an allergic reaction.

When a wasp stings you, they inject venom, which contains toxins that might create allergic reactions for some people. One in ten people who are stung two or more times eventually become allergic to wasp stings. Anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction to a wasp sting, can be deadly.

          Symptoms of Anaphylaxis

          • burning and reddened skin
          • mouth, tongue or throat swelling
          • swallowing and breathing difficulties
          • nausea and abdominal cramps, increased heart rate
          • chest pain or tightness
          • noisy breathing
          • strange metallic mouth taste
          • unconsciousness

          Common Wasp Species

While hundreds of species of wasps bees worldwide, only a small number of them can be found in Australia.

By understanding their habits and lifecycle, you can better identify the wasp species on your property. The most common wasp species in Australia are specified here:

          • European and English Wasp — Known for causing painful stings, these two wasp species are commonly found in New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. They build nests in sheltered locations. Their body is yellow and black, but their markings can vary depending on the species. They can grow from 12 to 17 mm. They feed on insects and sweets. Their colony can grow up to 25 000 individual wasps. The wasp queen only survives over winter. The entire nest dies during winter, and that includes all the males and females.
          • Yellowjackets (social wasp) — The worker wasp is around 15 mm in length, while the queen wasp is a little bigger. They have alternating black and yellow bands on their body and two pairs of wings. They feed on insects, but they can also eat food that humans consume. Yellowjackets can repeatedly sting if they are provoked. Their nests are found in trees, bushes, attics, wall cavities, floors, sheds and similar buildings.
          Wasp

          Wasp Pest Management

Place bait in a visible location somewhere on your property. Once they locate the food, they will fly directly back to their nest.

However, take note that wasps like searching for food can do it within half a kilometre away from their nest. Therefore, it is recommended to hire professional pest controllers to destroy wasp nests around your home and courtyard, especially if you have experienced an allergic reaction to a wasp sting.

            Residential Spider Treatment

Here are some simple tips on how to prevent spiders from causing serious harm.

            • Do not leave clothes with pockets drying overnight outside in the garden.
            • Do not leave shoes outside in the garage or under the house uncovered.
            • Wear working gloves when working in your garden.
            • Don’t walk barefoot outside at night.

Here are some facts about Australian spiders

            • Australia has about 2,000 species of spiders, and the vast majority of them are harmless to humans.
            • Simple household tricks such as closing windows, installing simple weather strips on doors, and even fly screens keep most spiders out from home.
            • Immediate medical assistance is required for funnel-web, mouse, red-back, or white-tailed spider bites.

            Spiders in Sydney

Sydney is home to some of the world’s most dangerous spiders, including the funnel-web spider and redback spider. There are two types of spiders in Sydney, spiders that create webs and those that prefer to hide around your garden in holes and crevices. Most spiders found around the home are harmless. In most cases, common sense and regular pest control will help keep the family safe from spiders. However, some spiders may pose a threat as their bites are extremely painful and potentially fatal.

Even worse, according to News Australia, a new species of ”peacock spider” has been discovered. Yes, that’s right. This is a discovery for a country already brimming with eight-legged creatures. The truth is, Aussies aren’t new to the spider epidemic, especially since the rainy season contributes to the problem. And while spiders may not be your favourite creatures to look at, they are fascinating to learn about. However, the last thing you want is to keep an uninvited guest in your house feeling welcomed.

One of the worst things about spiders is that they have a penchant for showing up in places we least expect them to be. In bathrooms, underneath the table, these are some of the many places they like to hide on the staircases. Depending on the species, some of them go unnoticed until you have a full-blown infestation. Because they come in various shapes and sizes, it makes some species even harder to detect!

            Dangerous Spiders in Sydney

Did you know spiders have been ranked number 7 for diversity? There are hundreds of species of spiders, with Australia hosting 2,400 different species!

            The Sydney Funnel-Webs

It’s probably the deadliest spider in the world (unless there’s a new discovery, of course) because of the venom inside its body. It produces a highly toxic venom that it injects using its large fangs.

Luckily, funnel web spiders are mostly found in the forests of New South Wales. But they can also be found in urban areas, crawling into backyards to hide from humidity. Although their size is 1.5cm, their fangs are larger than a snake’s! Sometimes they can be found lurking near swimming pools. Unfortunately, there are more than 40 types of funnel-web spiders. Luckily, anti-venom has been developed and has proven to be highly effective against these critters. They’re more active during warmer months, mainly March and November.

            Funnel-web Spider

            Redback Spider

If nightmares had a new name, it would be ”˜Redback Spider’. This type of spider is common in urban areas, hiding in shelters and mailboxes. While there’s no fixed number of redback spider bites, around 2000 are reported every year. The female redback spiders are the ones that bite the most and are 1cm in size, being bigger than their male counterparts. What sets these spiders apart from others is the red marking on their back, hence their name.

The victim will be in excruciating pain. Depending on the severity of the bite, the pain can last for hours. Other than this, lethargy and nausea are common symptoms.

            Redback Spider

            Mouse Spiders

Not as friendly as Mickey Mouse, mouse spiders are found near rivers and waterways. Unfortunately, their venom and bite are similar to funnel-web spiders. This can make them difficult to tell apart. Luckily, they are less aggressive than funnel-web spiders and are known to be lethargic. However, when provoked, they can prove to be a ferocious enemy. They are active during the daytime, unlike other species of spiders.

            Trap-Door Spiders

Trap-door spiders are excellent at camouflaging, hence their name. This helps them lure in prey. They’re common in urban areas but depending. Their bite can cause minor problems for humans. If the person is sensitive, their bite can lead to nausea, malaise, and lethargy.

            Getting help for spider bites

            First Aid

Appropriate first aid for venomous spider bites depends on the species of spider. In all cases, never cut a spider bite or tourniquet a limb. Don’t give the person anything to eat or drink. Seek immediate medical help.

            • When bitten by a funnel web, redback, or mouse spider, the first thing you need to do is to bandage the affected area firmly. Splint if possible. Ensure the person lies still because not moving will help slow the venom moving through the body.
            • If a red-back and white-tailed spider have bitten you, you need to wash the bitten area thoroughly. Do not bandage because the pressure will increase pain. Apply an icepack.

            Spider Bites

Symptoms of a venomous spider bite may include:

            • Redness and itching
            • Increasing pain
            • Nausea
            • Vomiting
            • Sweating (perspiring)
            • Dilated pupils
            • Uncontrollable muscle spasms
            • Unconsciousness
            Redback Spider

            Spider Venom

Most spiders use venom to paralyse their prey, usually flying insects that get caught in their intricate webs. Spiders may only bite humans when they feel threatened and when they do, their fangs are usually not strong enough to break the human skin. Spider venom usually has no long-lasting effect on the human body and pain management is through an icepack.

However, there are a few Australian spiders that can cause bites resulting in hospital care. They include the funnel-web, the mouse, the red-back, and the white-tailed spiders. Babies, young children, the elderly, and people with existing heart conditions are at great risk of these spider bites. Some people also experience allergic reactions to certain venoms and this requires immediate medical treatment. If in doubt, see your doctor, go to the emergency department of your nearest hospital or dial triple zero (000) to call an ambulance.

Antivenoms are available for the treatment of red-back and the funnel-web spider bites.

More about the Funnel Web Spiders

            Funnel Web Spider

Since last year, Australia has been trying to take control of bushfires, flooding and hailstorms. As these extreme events spread to every part of this country, they bring about homelessness, loss of agricultural land, water-borne diseases and serious air pollution. Yet, the difficulties do not end there. Now, Sydney residents also have to fight the prevalence of pests and insects, which the weather has triggered. According to spider pest control specialists, the recent floods and high temperatures have created a perfect condition for some arachnids to thrive. One of those is the deadly funnel-web spiders.

            World’s deadliest spider

Australia is notorious for being home to various dangerous animals besides its well-known animals, such as koalas and kangaroos. Some parts of Australia’s coast are filled with great white sharks, while on land, spiders are the most feared creature. Spider bites are deadly. Spiders are one of the most popular poisonous animals in Australia that people need to keep under control.  Pest control specialists have estimated that there are around 10000 species of spiders all over the country, most of which are in Sydney.

They also point out the species which are posing a threat to human beings: the funnel-web spider. Funnel-web spiders are mainly found in eastern Australia, especially Sydney. The venom from their bite is extremely toxic, thus easily killing people in late emergency aid. Funnel-web spiders are the deadliest spiders in Sydney and possibly on the globe. Because of the recent rain and now the hot days we are experiencing, funnel-web spiders will start moving around.

The spider seeks shelter in humid areas and gathers in a large number in New South Wales, particularly Sydney, its state capital. Besides, they also inhabit populated cities and forests. Despite rare encounters with humans, the spider can bite people if they feel threatened. Though just around 2 cm big, the Sydney funnel-web’s teeth are larger than a snake’s. Therefore, the spiders can even tap through human nails and toenails. According to a medical specialist, their venom can paralyze the human nervous system. If bitten by a male funnel web, you will stand a high chance of fatality.

In events when the temperature rises, like massive fires, the spiders tend to move inside houses. They are most likely to be found in moist places like the laundry or inside shoes. That is why homeowners need to watch out really carefully. In 1981, an anti-venom to the funnel-web spider bite was introduced and put into use. However, in 2012, Australia ran out of medicine and had to ask its residents to provide spiders to produce more.

            Perfect conditions to thrive

Funnel-web spiders become more active during the summer, yet they may recently thrive due to the “arid” weather, even when the summer has not come. The rains and high temperatures are the ideal weather conditions for dangerous spiders. In Sydney, the wet weather and high humidity have motivated funnel-webs to immigrate into houses. Apart from being a safe shelter, houses can provide a stable source of food to the spiders.

How to get rid of funnel-web spiders

Sydney is home to approximately 40 types of funnel-web spiders. It is important that homeowners need to take pest control measures to counter the arachnids. Funnel webs are unable to climb smooth surfaces, but they can move on rough brick walls. Some specialist advice involves homeowners deterring the deadly spiders by cutting their lawns short and keeping their yards free of clutter. “Funnel-webs cannot climb up glass or plastic, so once you put the lid on tightly, the funnel-web can’t get out”, said a Sydney pest control specialist. In Australia, if people spot funnel-web spiders and it is safe to do so, they can catch the spiders in a glass jar and bring them to the Australian Reptile Park, where they’re milked for their venom.

3 simple steps to eliminate the spiders

            1. Tidy up: Clean your place. The more junk you have in your house, the more likely a spider will come to stay.
            2. Sweep cobwebs away: Knock cobwebs down with a duster head to destroy spiders’ place.
            3. Insecticide Treatment: Use low-pressure sprays to eliminate the pests.

Dust mites usually refer to the mite species of the Dermatophagoides genus, but they may also refer to other mite species such as the Euroglyphus. These mites are usually associated with dust and dirt found indoors. Adult dust mites are microscopic in size, typically less than 0.5 mm long. Their body colour ranges from mostly white to a light tan colour.  As their name suggests, dust mites live and reproduce in areas where there are large amounts of dust. Therefore, they are a common, typical pest found wherever there are humans. They also have a vital role in our lives as they eat some of our organic waste products, such as human skin and hair cells. Each person sheds around 1.5 grams of skin which equals 0.3 kg to 0.45 kg each year. This amount of organic waste is more than enough to feed millions of dust mites. Dust Mite Pest Infestation

The complete life cycle of dust mites, from egg to a full adult stage, lasts around 30 days. Dust mites go through five stages: egg, larval stage, two nymphal stages and the adult stage.

How long do dust mites live?

Adult dust mites can live as long as two months, depending on the humidity and temperature in their environment. They prefer to live indoors with high humidity and warm temperatures.

Where can you find dust mites?

Dust mites can spread dramatically when conditions are favourable to them. Dust mites are concentrated in areas around the home with constant traffic, such as beds, chairs, and carpets with long fibres. Human skin flakes, house dust, fungal spores, insect scales are often found in these areas, which acts as an infinite food source for dust mites. Dust mites do not like bright light and will often hide in seams, ledges or behind furniture.

              Dust mites and allergies

              More about Dust Mites

Dust mites can survive almost every climate, from higher altitudes to indoor environments, especially in bedrooms and kitchen areas. They thrive in mattresses, carpets, cushions, draperies, pillows, bedding and under furniture. Their number can be pretty high and range at around 190 miles per 1 gram of dust.  Dust mites can survive even in dry climates and reproduce in bedding because of the moisture generated by humans during all night of breathing and perspiring. Dust mites reproduce throughout the year, and seasonal changes in their population can be hard to detect.

              Allergies

Dust mite allergy is quite common and is often associated with eczema, asthma and allergic rhinitis. Dust mite allergy is common in Australia. Dust mites are commonly found on the bed and found in every part of the house, such as the floor and furniture. Dust mites cause allergies as humans tend to react to various proteins (allergens) in their droppings. Each dust mite can produce 20 of these droppings every day. Therefore, these droppings may still cause allergic reactions to humans even after the mites are already dead.

If you’re allergic to dust mites, it’s best to regularly clean your property and conduct a building and pest inspection. Book our pest exterminators to prevent dust mites from causing any health problems.

              Treatment

              • If you suffer from a skin reaction to dust mites, anti-itching cream can soothe the irritation. For severe allergic reactions, you can take antihistamines.
              • People with asthma and similar respiratory issues should consult their general physician or their immunologist to identify the allergens and relieve the symptoms.
              • Allergy caused by dust mites can be managed with immunotherapy and reduce the number of dust mites in the house.

Professional Fly Control and Prevention Methods

Our licensed pest controllers will follow this process:

                1. Identify the fly species that frequent your property.
                2. Undertake a detailed site assessment.
                3. Evaluate and determine the pest management solution.
                4. Use the appropriate insecticide products or apply the right pest control measures.

We will also employ the following methods for more severe cases:

Fly bait / Fly trapping – these are usually in a granular formulation and are very effective mostly because they can be applied as a dry granule and scattered around, placed in bait stations, or mixed into a paste and applied to a vertical surface.

Residual insecticidal application – Synthetic Pyrethroids around doors, windows, and trash cans will repel and destroy flies. Adding sugar will attract flies to the surface that have been treated. Some of them are mixed with water and painted on surfaces.

                Site Evaluation

Fly pest control is a procedure that requires great knowledge, resources and cooperation from the client. Fly control requires a careful inspection of the premises. We will need to carry out a risk assessment before starting any work.

A fly control essentially involves checking the:

                • Geographic area – Is the property near a body of water?
                • Property orientation – We’ll check the location of doors and any possible entry points.
                • Structural details – Age, construction, current status, design, and all other structural details will have an influence on the building’s susceptibility to pests.
                • Lifestyle – Our success will depend strongly on your cooperation with the owners. If the owners leave their windows open and leave organic garbage on the premises, it will have a negative effect.

                Residential Fly Pest Management

                Exclusion

This involves preventing flies from entering your property.

                • Flyscreens – these can be mounted on all doors and windows as an effective pest exclusion device.
                • Airlocks – make sure you use airlocks that are properly designed to keep fruit flies out.
                • Strip curtains – these are often made of plastic and have a broad range of designs and thicknesses. Smaller ones are usually used in houses.
                • Air curtains are very rarely used because of the associated costs and a somewhat varying efficiency level.

                Restriction

This involves stopping pests from breeding and multiplying. This also involves removing food sources and breeding grounds. Restriction involves:

                • Waste removal
                • Removal of breeding locations
                • External lights – It is important to have external lighting. Fluorescent tubes and mercury vapour lamps are beautiful to most flying insects. There are special coloured bulbs that do not attract insects.

                Destruction

This is the most important part of every pest controller. There is an infinite number of chemical and non-chemical products that can be used as a control measure. We can say without hesitation that every insecticide on the market will kill flies, but this does not mean that you should pick the first one and go on a killing spree. Make sure to read the label on the product before using it.

                Fly Lifecycle

During their lifecycle, flies go through a complete metamorphosis. Most adult females are oviparous and lay eggs near or on food sources. Some flies, such as those that belong to the family Sarcophagidae are known as flesh flies. They are viviparous, which means that they deposit live larvae on decomposing matter. The emerging larvae feed on decomposing vegetable matter, and some are even predatory or parasitic.

                  Flea Pest Treatment

It can be tricky to get rid of a flea infestation in your home. An Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach is recommended to stop fleas strategically. IPM involves a detailed and thorough property inspection. A professional will check all hot spots and concentrate the flea treatment in those areas. Before conducting pest control, it is necessary to vacuum all the hot spots to clear the area of flea eggs. Vacuum cleaning will also clear dried blood which is a major food source for larvae.

An effective flea treatment involves these essential steps:

                  • Flea treatment for pets
                  • Property inspection
                  • Vacuuming and cleaning of premises
                  • Insecticide application

                  Residential Flea Control

There are dozens of ways to stop a flea infestation on your property. The best way would be to book a professional pest control team who can identify the areas in your home with a flea infestation. Booking a pest exterminator also guarantees that you’ll get a long-term solution to a flea infestation.

If you’re not yet ready to book, our team recommends the ff. to help you slow down fleas from spreading in and around your house:

Spray a lemon mixture to remove fleas.

Slice a whole lemon into thin pieces. Place the lemon in a pot with water and bring it to a boil. After boiling it, please leave it to stand overnight for best results. Pour that water into a spray bottle and spray onto areas where fleas are present.

Use botanical dust mixed with boric acid.

The easiest way to exterminate them is by using botanical dust mixed with boric acid or borate powder. Adult fleas can live for about one week without food. However, flea larvae can survive for several months, so it is important to go for larvae first. This mixture will prevent fleas from spreading.

Botanical dust is one of the oldest natural insecticides, and borate is a mineral that is widely used for making detergents, insecticides, and wood preservatives. As an insecticide, it poisons the flea’s stomach. The mixture of botanical dust and borate acid or powder can be used on your carpet, furniture, bed, and your pet’s bed. After applying this mixture, it is best to leave the house for a minimum of 24 hours. The mixture has to settle for a day. Afterwards, you should clean your bed sheets and vacuum your carpet and furniture to remove the mixture. Remember to use a mask when using this mixture at home.

Fleas are generally too small to see, this is a view under a microscope x 100 times.

Use water and detergent to trap fleas.

Put a combination of water and dish detergent in a shallow bowl that will act as a deadly trap for fleas. Fleas will die when they jump onto that bowl.

Fleas are attracted to the light, so it is good to place the bowl with the mixture next to a light source, especially at night. Since fleas are attracted to the light, many will fall into that bowl and drown.

                  Repel fleas using cedar chips.

Fleas don’t like the smell of cedar. Put cedar chips in areas infested by fleas. Place cedar chips around your home, especially under your furnishing and near the dog bed. Because many dogs are allergic to cedar, you first need to check if your dog is allergic or not.

If you want to use it in your bed, you can wrap cedar chips using a cotton cloth and put them under your pillow. Not only will your bed be protected from fleas, but it will also smell nice and fresh.

Almost every local pet store has cedar chips for sale. You can also find it in a home improvement store.

                  Sprinkle salt on your carpet.

By spreading salt over the carpet, salt will absorb moisture and help kill fleas. Salt needs to be small enough to attach itself to the flea, so it is important to use fine-grain salt.

When flea attaches to the salt crystals, fleas will bleed to death as the salt can scratch them while they move.

Leave the salt for at least a week. Afterwards, you should vacuum the carpet to remove dead fleas and eggs.

Salt can be used to control a flea infestation.

Use a vacuum cleaner to remove fleas.

Most fleas would not survive the vacuum cleaner. Make sure to regularly vacuum infested areas. You don’t need to use a fancy high-power vacuum cleaner because average vacuums will also do the job. Just make sure to throw away used vacuum bags.

                  Spray insect growth regulators.

You can stop fleas from fully developing by spraying insect grown regulators. This method is usually used to stop a large-scale flea infestation. It is recommended to consult an expert who can identify key areas in your property that needs to be sprayed. Handling dangerous chemicals on your own is also not advisable.

                  Buy ready-to-use flea traps.

Since fleas are attracted to heat and light, fleas fall into the trap and die. However, flea traps do not offer a lasting solution. It is still best to hire pest control experts for a long-term solution to a flea infestation.

                  Dogs and Cats Flea Treatment

                  Regularly bathe your pet.

It is recommended to regularly bathe your pet using specialised pet shampoos formulated to stop fleas. Apply the flea shampoo all over your pet’s body, especially near their ears and butt. Take note that fleas could jump and hide in on your pet’s neck, head, and butt. Let shampoo soak for at least ten minutes so it can do its work and kill the fleas. When a dog has been dried, use a comb to remove dead fleas and eggs from the fur.

                  Apply flea drops.

There are flea drops you can easily buy from a veterinarian. This flea drop can be applied to the neck and can protect your pet from fleas for at least 3 months. Using a flea drop is advisable, especially if you let your pet roam outdoors in the garden.

                  Use flea spot treatments.

This spot treatment can be used once per month. The spot-treatment is applied directly to your pet’s skin, mostly between the shoulder blade and several spots down the spine.

                  Give your pets oral tablets.

You can give your pet oral tablets. Once in the bloodstream, the medicine can attack the flea’s nervous system and save your pet from further harm. This is an immediate treatment that is suitable for bad infestations. Consult your veterinarian first before giving your pet oral tablets.

                  Use vinegar.

Bathe your dog with a mixture of vinegar and water to deter fleas. Please note that this is not advisable for cats because their pH is much more sensitive than dogs.

                  Scabies Mites

What are scabies mites and why should you get rid of them?

We're the Masters of Pest Control in Sydney

                  Tell us your pest problem

The human scabies mite (Sarcoptes scabei, sometimes known as the human itch mite) is the only known arthropod in Australia that can infest human skin and cause health problems. This species of mites are found worldwide. It can live under the skin and cause a condition that is known as scabies. The mites are very small (less than 0.5 mm long) straw-coloured and oval-shaped bugs with short thick legs. They are wingless with no eyes. Mite larvae have six legs, while the nymphs have eight legs.

Scabies mites dig burrows to get under the skin and make tunnels through the upper layers of the skin using an enzyme that dissolves human skin. They do not need blood to survive but rather eat human skin inside the tunnels. Typically, only one mite lives in a tunnel and rarely leaves it. In most cases, an infected person may have less than 20 female mites.

Protect your family from scabies mites. Get the best deal here by booking a property and pest inspection. We can beat any comparable quote. Please send us a message, chat or call (02) 8007 4666!

What are the first signs of a scabies mites problem?

Most scabies infestations are hard to detect, especially during the early stages. A scabies mite infestation may only be visible after a month or so. The first symptoms occur only after the host has been sensitised and has developed an allergic reaction to scabies, mites, faeces, skin moults and saliva (or the fluids present in the tunnels). The tunnels can be pale grey and threadlike that often follow the natural creases in the skin. They are mostly found in the host’s elbows, genitals, breasts, wrists and hands, especially areas between the fingers.

How long do scabies mites live?

Their life cycle lasts around 10 to 17 days. They mate on the skin surface. Once females are fertilized, they will quickly burrow into the skin. The scabies mite lays individual eggs at a rate of 3 eggs per day. A female mite can lay 40 eggs during its lifetime. The scabies mite egg hatches in 48 hours.

                    Scabies Mite Magnified

                    Scabies mite infestation danger

Rashes may appear due to an allergic reaction to scabies mites. Patients may feel severe itching and irritation across their entire bodies, which becomes severe at night. Scabies mites may also transfer diseases. Crusted scabies, also known as Norwegian scabies, is a term that describes the extreme infestation of thousands of scabies mites.

TO STOP ANY PEST INFESTATION, CALL OUR TEAM ON (02) 8007 4666.

How do you diagnose and treat scabies caused by mites?

The presence of scabies mites needs to be confirmed by a general practitioner before any treatment can begin. Skin scrapings are often needed before a diagnosis can be made. These need to be taken from bleeding and examined under a microscope to check and confirm an infestation.

There is a new alternative to skin scrapings. Video dermatoscopy is a noninvasive test used to determine mites, their eggs, and faces using a camera that magnifies the skin. Once the diagnosis has been made, scabies infestations are usually easy to control with topical scabicides.

                    Scabies Microscopic

What are the common problems associated with scabies mites?

Scabies mites bite humans, especially around the armpits, ankles, and areas where clothing rubs tightly against the skin. Some mite species can cause very painful bites. Their bites result in itchy red marks or rashes. Intense itching and scratching may lead to infection.

Scabies mites may cause persistent, itchy rashes. These pests burrow into the skin to breed and then emerges to feed on flesh, which causes discomfort.

People with dust allergies are usually also allergic to dust mites that live in carpets and furniture. Mite carcasses and feces can become airborne, and people can inhale them. This will cause stuffy noses, watery eyes, and sneezing.

                    Scabies Mite

How do you get scabies mites?

Scabies mites are often transmitted through physical contact, especially during sexual contact or by simply sharing the bed. Mites live up to three days away from their host. They are a serious problem in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia, where up to 50% of some communities are infected. Improvements in hygiene and treatment have successfully lowered infestation rates, but the problem persists in some communities.

                    Silverfish

Why are silverfish considered as pests?

We're the Masters of Pest Control in Sydney

                    Tell us your pest problem

Silverfish can get into unopened food packages. They eat carbohydrates (starch, cellulose and sugar), glue in books, shampoos, soaps, silk, linen, and plants. They also eat mould, fungi, and dead insects.

Where can you usually find silverfish?

These insects are capable of living in most climates, but they prefer dark and moist places such as attics, basements, laundry rooms, garages, store rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. Silverfish can be commonly be found hiding under the sink or in bathtubs, bookcases, closets, doors, and window frames. They also hide in storage boxes full of clothes or papers.

If you have silverfish in your property, you may consult our team by sending us a message, chat, or by calling (02) 8007 4666.

                      General Information

                      Baits And Traps for Silverfish

There are many traps on the market that can be used for silverfish extermination and they can be cheap and safe to use. One of them is moist and rolled up newspapers. You tie them with elastics and leave them overnight to catch these bugs. Next day, they might be full of silverfish and you just throw it in the garbage outside the house. Repeat this method every night until you rid of them all.

Take the glass jar and mask it with a tape. You can fill it with bread or with water, and few teaspoons of sugar. Place that jar near infested places. Silverfish will climb up the tape and will fall in the jar. They will die in the jar because they are not able to climb up the glass jar.

Sticky traps are also effective and you can buy them in any local hardware store. These traps attract bugs which then get stuck in glue. For silverfish baits ,you can use moist cotton and starchy food items to attrack these pesky insects.

Why should you stop a silverfish infestation?
