Pests in Food

Protecting your stored products from insect infestation

Known as stored product insects, pests that are often found in food cover a large number of different insects. These insects can infest a wide range of stored food products such as cereals, grains, rice, fruit and seeds.

These insects present a constant health hazard in households but also in industry and commercial premises such as food processing plants, warehouse units, stores, restaurants, silos and farms. They are known to have caused large economic damage and losses through contamination of food warehouses and facilities. All food that has been contaminated by pests are unfit for consumption by people.

The identification and removal of the source of pest infestation is the most important part in the effective control of these types of pests.

Food processing plants and grain storages will benefit tremendously from using a professional pest management service that are able to contain and remove infestations while keeping hygiene and sanitation at highest levels and following all applicable regulations and laws.

How to get rid of insects in food?

In order to get rid of pests in stored food, the food that has been contaminated must be removed and thrown away in such a way that will not spread on other food and surfaces.

Professional pest management services from Masters Pest Control Sydney will help you with effective management and ensure minimum disruption to your everyday life while taking care of full compliance with health and safety and any food legislation obligations.

Our pest management process focuses on 3 main aspects to ensure the most effective solution to your pest problems. These include Prevention, Inspection and Control.

Prevention

Preventing access to stored food on your premises is the first line of defence against pests in food. High hygiene levels and sanitation have to be kept throughout the year, especially during warm parts of the year when high temperature can speed up the spreading of pests. Stored food should be kept at temperatures below 16°C. All excess food material as well as accumulated dust should be cleaned up. Food should not be kept on the floor and near walls and all raw materials should be stored in robust packaging that can help in preventing pest infestation. Tight fitting insect screens should be installed and kept in good condition at all times.

Inspection

Food infestation by pests can be localized to a small area such a bag of food. However, if it is left undetected and untreated, it will spread quickly throughout the premise. This is why a regular inspection and monitoring procedure is a vital part in management of pests in food. Incoming food and raw materials in restaurants and other food processing plants should be inspected outside from the main storage so that a possible infestation would not spread to the whole storage. Traps and lures need to be used for effective monitoring and locating infestation as well as to give information on the type and severity of infestation. The use of pheromone pots and similar glue traps can help to monitor infestation and after the captured species reach a specific number, a proper treatment will start. Light traps should be installed in all inside areas to control and monitor all flying insects. Some commercial traps use UV light to attract some of the pests in food. Pheromone lures can be added to these traps. Aside from all this, we strongly suggest your staff do routine monitoring so all pests can be detected as early as possible.

Control

Every time a pest activity has been found, control measures must be taken to stop the infestation from spreading. These measures can be only small and localised management procedures and if the infestation is severe and has spread throughout the premises, it might be needed to treat the whole premise. Preventing the contamination to stored food and other products in our top priority. This is why our services include the following:

  1. Dusting – some dusts have pesticide properties and can be even mechanical in nature which erodes the insect’s cuticle and causes desiccation.

  2. Fumigation – fumigants which are gaseous substances can be used to effectively get rid of pests in food disregarding their life stages. Fumigation procedures need to be done in gas proof areas so gas can be contained for enough time that it needs to be effective.

  3. Precision Spraying – these can be used to deal with pest infestations in structural areas and environment. The success ration depends on the access and cleaning of loose residues.

  4. Space sprayers – space treatment of environments with fine atomised droplets with approved pesticides are very useful in managing and containing cross infestation. Thermal droplets are used to spread aerosols with approved pesticides.

  5. Exterior infestations – in cases where exterior infestations have been identified, pest managers need to use an approved insecticide treatment to deal with insect activity on the outside areas of buildings and storage facilities. Use of residual insecticides will reduce pests in food.

  6. Auto-aerosol spraying devices – these can be used to spread a measured amount of aerosol insecticides in the air. Only formulations based on pyrethrum can be used because other can have high toxicity to mammals. Expert pest managers say that this procedure has only moderate effectiveness that highly depends on location, design, distribution and reticulation that all have a high influence on the end result.

  7. Controlled atmosphere – in situations where gaseous substances can´t be used, the material and other goods can be placed in large ovens at 60°C for half an hour in order to kill pests in all their stages of life.

  8. Grain protectants – protection of foods from pests must be done in all product stages, from harvest to processing. Grain protectants are insecticidal dusts that are applied to grains in transportation. As these grains are intended for human consumption, strict regulations and guidelines exist and need to be followed.
