“Have food, will travel.” This might as well be the battlecry of birds joining the lively restaurant and bar scene in Sydney. Often spotted are pigeons and Indian mynas, dozens of which enjoy hanging out in these establishments.
These birds seemingly want to rub elbows with locals and tourists as they wine and dine in the city. But their true intention is revealed as soon as they start pecking on the floor—they just want your food.
Looks Can Be Deceiving
Indian mynas and pigeons defecate everywhere. Their droppings contain salmonella, cryptococcal meningitis and E. coli, among many others. Lice and mites may also live on their skin and feathers, making them viable carriers of these tiny pests.
Al fresco areas in upscale brunch spots, hole-in-the-wall pubs and anything else in between are not spared from their unhygienic practices.
But the worst offender of all are seagulls. They prey on diners who are out and about, swooping down to steal their lunch. Circular Quay, being by the water and home to waterfront restos, is a hotspot for these gulls.
Gulls No Longer Gullible
It’s been said that animals that coexist with human populations have a tendency to become more aggressive. With seagulls, they also become a lot smarter.
